Pierrefitte

History of Pierrefitte

The Pierrefitte plant was built in 1912 by Société Pyrénéenne du Silico Manganèse, producing since then various types of ferroalloys and silicon alloy. Since 1981 it has specialized in the production of inoculants through carbothermal reduction of quartz. Since 2011 it has also been specializing in the remelting and treatment of Ferrosilicon and Silicon.

Plant facilities

  • One 16 MW furnace equipped with Söderberg electrodes for the production of Steel alloys, with a treatment filter
  • One casting line
  • Two induction furnaces with a unitary power of 3 MW for the production of Steel and Silicon alloys
  • One crushing-powdering-sifting line for transforming inoculants into grain and dust
  • One mixer for producing special inoculants
  • One installation of Microsilica densification

Location

The plant is in Pierrefitte Nestalas in the Valley d'Argelès Gazost, in the Province of Hautes Pyrénées, near the border with Spain.

It is on the winter resort route, which passes through the Valley of Tourmalet and Midi Peak, approximately 20 km south of Lourdes.

Pierrefitte can be reached by taking D921 road. It is at 200 km from Toulouse, 100 km from Pau and 40 km from Tarbes. The closest airport is the Tarbes–Lourdes–Pyrénées Airport.

The main ports used for international shipments are Marseille and Barcelona.
